Organized Planning – Career

We left off last month with areas leadership was needed when Think and Grow Rich was published in 1937. Unfortunately, some of those areas are the ones that need the most leadership today. But we need to include professional sports to the list, you just don’t see as many sports icons like we did in the past. (Fertile Fields in Which New Leadership is required). Although there are more streams of media today that seems to feed off the negative stories. Sports figures are human and all humans have flaws, the more popular you become the larger the chance for those flaws to become public. On the other side everyone has the ability to help others, some chose to, others don’t, and eventually if you do you may get recognized.

The rest of the chapter on Organized Planning outlines what a person needs to do to look for a job and how to effectively market yourself to get the job you want. But with everything you need to evaluate yourself first in order to see where your strengths and weaknesses are and what gaps you need to fill in order to become more marketable.

There are a number of reasons why we struggle to achieve success and Mr. Hill lays out 30 reasons for failure.

1. UNFAVORABLE HEREDITARY BACKGROUND.
2. LACK OF A WELL-DEFINED PURPOSE IN LIFE.
3. LACK OF AMBITION TO AIM ABOVE MEDIOCRITY.
4. INSUFFICIENT EDUCATION.
5. LACK OF SELF-DISCIPLINE.
6. ILL HEALTH.
7. UNFAVORABLE ENVIRONMENTAL INFLUENCES DURING CHILDHOOD.
8. PROCRASTINATION.
9. LACK OF PERSISTENCE.
10. NEGATIVE PERSONALITY.
11. LACK OF CONTROLLED SEXUAL URGE.
12. UNCONTROLLED DESIRE FOR “SOMETHING FOR NOTHING.”
13. LACK OF A WELL DEFINED POWER OF DECISION.
14. ONE OR MORE OF THE 6 BASIC FEARS.
15. WRONG SELECTION OF A MATE IN MARRIAGE.
16. OVER-CAUTION.
17. WRONG SELECTION OF ASSOCIATES IN BUSINESS.
18. SUPERSTITION AND PREJUDICE.
19. WRONG SELECTION OF A VOCATION.
20. LACK OF CONCENTRATION OF EFFORT.
21. THE HABIT OF INDISCRIMINATE SPENDING.
22. LACK OF ENTHUSIASM.
23. INTOLERANCE.
24. INTEMPERANCE.
25. INABILITY TO COOPERATE WITH OTHERS.
26. POSSESSION OF POWER THAT WAS NOT ACQUIRED THROUGH SELF EFFORT.
27. INTENTIONAL DISHONESTY.
28. EGOTISM AND VANITY.
29. GUESSING INSTEAD OF THINKING.
30. LACK OF CAPITAL.
(Here is an expanded version of the Thirty Causes of Failure)

When you look over this list of possible failures, which ones do you or have you struggled with? Identify what failures you experienced, write them down and then write down what you did to overcome it or what you need or could’ve done to overcome it. The response to your failures can be vital when marketing yourself to a prospective employer.

Chapter seven on Organized Planning also covers when and how to apply for a position. It’s interesting to read the different forms of media that could be used back in 1937 to promote yourself. Mr. Hill would’ve been amazed at the variety of methods available on the internet to promote yourself and spread your message, not to mention the ability to research topics compared to what needed to be done in a library during his time.

The “How” to apply for a position is covered at great depths, from the format of your resume, or “brief” as he calls it, and the steps to get the job you desire. The biggest takeaway from this section is to forget “what the organization can do for you?” but “how can your talents help the prospected organization succeed?”

Napoleon outlines how you need to adopt his QQS formula as a habit. QSS stands for, Quality of service, Quantity of service, and Spirit of service.

Let us analyze the formula to make sure we understand exactly what it means.

QUALITY of service shall be construed to mean the performance of every detail, in connection with your position, in the most efficient manner possible, with the object of greater efficiency always in mind.

QUANTITY of service shall be understood as the HABIT of rendering all the service of which you are capable, at all times, with the purpose of increasing the amount of service rendered as greater skill is developed through practice and experience. Emphasis is again placed on the word HABIT.

SPIRIT of service shall be construed to mean the HABIT of agreeable, harmonious conduct which will induce cooperation from associates and fellow employees.

Adequacy of QUALITY and QUANTITY of service is not sufficient to maintain a permanent market for your services. The conduct, or the SPIRIT in which you deliver service, is a strong determining factor in connection with both the price you receive, and the duration of employment.

You can only imagine how valuable you’ll become to others if you follow this formula. But first you need to focus on adding value to yourself before people can value you. First you need to find the gaps in your performance through evaluating yourself.

One of the ways to really examine yourself is to answer the 28 questions in the self-analysis questionnaire. This personal inventory, if answered truthfully, will raise your awareness level and help you identify your performance gaps. Whether you act upon them or not has been a struggle for mankind sign the beginning of time.

This chapter on Organized Planning continues to outline ways to find opportunities to accumulate riches by analyzing markets and how to market yourself. It’s the longest chapter in Think and Grow Rich and I think if Mr. Hill would’ve come out with a second edition he would’ve shortened or split this chapter up.

If you’re currently reading this book then take some time to reread this chapter and explore how you can increase your leadership skills to give you more soulutions.
