Leadership Gold – Chapter 22: For Everything You Gain, You Give Up Something

Do you know people who don’t give anything up and want to keep getting more? What really happens to a person that thinks they don’t have to give anything up and wants to keep getting more?

People who struggle to give up to go up may have a low self-esteem and having more makes them feel important. Do you think that the more someone brags and flaunts what they have the less secure they are with themselves?

In this chapter John lists a number of tradeoffs he has made in order to achieve success;

1. Trade Affirmation for Accomplishment

Do you do something for accolades or to achieve something? If you only do it for the recognition, are you the one doing the work?

2. Trade Security for Significance

Have you ever quit your job for a lower paying job that would give you more experience? Or maybe you left a prestigious position to follow your passion?

3. Trade Financial Gain for Future Potential

This is a hard one for me. Sometimes I need to think, how far in dept am I willing to go in order to advance my skills and abilities. Anyone who has student loans should be able to relate to this trade off.

4. Trade Immediate Pleasure for Personal Growth

Do you want to watch television, hang out with friends, read book or take a class? What will bring you the most value for your time?

5. Trade Exploration for Focus

How spread out are you? Are you working in your strengths? Once you explore yourself and find your true strengths and passion, give up or delegate the rest.

6. Trade Quantity of Life for Quality of Life

Do you have a, “I want more” mentality? It reminds me of people who have dozens of friends, but not one who they can depend on or one that helps them achieve more.

7. Trade Acceptable for Excellence

Is it your goal in life to be average? If not, go the extra mile.

8. Trade Addition for Multiplication

Are you leading only followers? Maybe it’s time to change it up. Either encourage them to become leaders or find people who are.

9. Trade the First Half for the Second Half

The first half of your life is mainly focused on becoming successful. You cannot give what you do not have. If people don’t see you as successful, can you ever be truly significant?

10. Trade Your Work for God for a Walk with God

If you’re not a religious person, what is your higher power? You work for your own success, but when you walk with your higher power, you have a chance to become significant.

What have you traded success for? Thinking back on my life I had a tendency to play first and pay later, and yes I do agree, it does cost more.

Think about that new car you wanted but didn’t really need. If you’re like me you need to get a loan to buy it. So you get the new car now, but over the course of a number of years you pay for it monthly. By the time it’s paid off, you gave up more in the end (interest) then you would’ve if you kept the old car and saved your money.

I believe that some people’s ego may get in the way of them being able to give something up. They think, “Why should I have to give up something?” Instead of thinking, “If I give something up now, I’ll be able to achieve more in the future.”

What do you need to give up today to become more successful tomorrow?
