Leadership Gold – Chapter 14: Keep Learning to Keep Leading

WHAT!!!! What does learning have to do with leading? I already know my profession, so what else do I need to learn?Old classic library with books on table

I don’t know how many times I’ve heard this. People don’t see the value in learning how to lead, or they just believe that learning how to lead is impossible because you’re born to lead, right?

Wrong!

Anyone can learn to lead other people better than they already do. And yes, everyone leads someone, even if that someone is you. How can you be a better you? How can you communicate with others better?

I relate the need to improve your skills as a leader to the same level of skills needed to make an athlete successful. Everyone will agree that if you want to become a professional athlete, you need to learn about the sport and improve yourself mentally and physically to reach a higher level. The same holds true for leadership. That’s why John says “If you want to lead, you must learn. If you want to continue to lead, you must continue to learn.”

Do you improve your leadership skills prior to advancing into a higher leadership position, or when you get the position? If it’s the later, you may not get the position or once there you’ll struggle to build trust with your new employees.

President John F. Kennedy said it right, “Leadership and learning are indispensable of each other.”

John offers three suggestions in this chapter to help you continue to grow;

  1. Invest In Yourself First. Simply stated, “You cannot give what you do not have.”
  2. Be a Continual Learner. It’s easier to first find your passion, and then devour all the information you can about it.
  3. Create a Growth Environment for the People You Lead. If you don’t help those around you grow, they’ll slow down your growth.

If you have folks that resist growth, find out what their passion is and help them grow in that area. Remember that average people try to pull down anyone who is trying to go above average, so people who resist growth may become a negative influence on others.

In order to really grow you need to develop a growth plan for yourself and then develop habits to incorporate that plan. John’s new book on The 15 Invaluable Laws of Growth can help you to reach your potential.

What do you do daily to help you grow?
