Know how to escape grief. A profitable maxim, for it is the way to escape regret. A little prudence helps much, for she is the light of happiness and therefore of peace. Don’t be a purveyor of scandal or its recipient, but forbid it entrance, much less give it aid. One person keeps his ears only to have them bathed in sweet flattery; another, only to have them deafened by the bitterness of evil gossip. For there are those who cannot live without his position. Neither is it the law of self-preservation that you must wish upon yourself a lifelong regret, in order to provide momentary pleasure to another, however close to you. Never sin against your own happiness in order to comfort another who comes for advice and then does not stay. In every situation which spells joy to another and pain you, this is the proper rule. It is better that he be downcast today than that you be tomorrow, and helpless in the matter to boot.
